Peace Day
Peace Day was an initiative I pitched, planned, and coordinated with another student in light of recent terrorist attacks. It was a day for members of the university community to share our differences and similarities in an open and accepting environment.
We worked with the Office of Marketing and External Affairs to promote this as an official campus-wide event, and we recruited 11 different clubs, organizations, and departments on campus to come together for a day of diversity, acceptance, understanding, and solidarity. Each had a table or section with a unique activity or exhibit that embodied their definition of peace. The activities and exhibits included peace flags, a mediation labyrinth, origami crane making, customizable peace poems, a Chinese lantern board game, and exhibit on the cognitive effects of meditation, and the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations. We assigned activities to groups that wanted to participate but didn’t know what they wanted to do.
We also hired local vendors for the event – a yoga instructor, a Tai Chi instructor, and a steel drum band. I was personally in charge of coordinating with the Tai Chi instructor. This included scheduling, placement, payment, and giving her a tour of the grounds before the event.
